Periodontal treatment

Dependent on the extent of you gum disease, there are various options of treatment that may be recommended to you. This ranges from a simple scale and polish to complex surgical procedures that are performed by a specialist.

Scale and polish

A scale and polish is a removal of calculus and staining carried out by a dentist, therapist or hygienist.  Usually using something called an ultrasonic scaler or a hand scaler, they will remove any visible calculus deposits.

Root Surface Debridement

The root surface is smoothed in a process called root debridement, this helps removes any remaining calculus or “contaminated” cementum on the root and leaves the surface less susceptible to the bacteria. If you have periodontitis that is localised to one part of your mouth, root debridement can be done in just that area. However, if you have a more generalised form of periodontitis spreading throughout your mouth, you may require multiple visits to complete the treatment effectively. This is usually done by our oral surgery specialist.

Specialist referral

Any patient under the age of 18 with pocket depths greater than 5.5mm

Any patient who experiences bone loss of greater than 2mm in any area over a twelve month period

Any patient with deteriorating periodontal condition, who has concurrent medical history factors such as osteoporosis and diabetes

Where there has not been a satisfactory response to treatment provided in the clinic

Patients who require treatment of implant related periodontal disease

To meet requirement for NHS funding, you need to have maintained your oral hygiene to a high standard, attended for periodontal treatment and examination appointments at the times prescribed, and have been a non-smoker for at least 6 months (NHS England will ask your GP to confirm this).

If you do not meet the eligibility for NHS referral, you can still opt to see a specialist privately.
