We offer a choice of four different types of crown at Bembridge Dental. All of the options will all be discussed with you, however the recommended option will be based upon your current dental needs. Below we have listed the main advantages and disadvantages of each type of crown, however your dentist will advise you which is the best option in your particular case.

Full metal crown

An all-metal crown can make an excellent choice, due to the fact they are very strong, and resistant to fracture. For a metal crown, minimal tooth structure needs to be removed for the preparation. The disadvantages of a metal crown include the colour, whereby the crown may be visible when you talk. There is also the possibility of metal allergies, including nickel, chrome and beryllium.

A full metal crown is band three on the NHS, and is also available privately as detailed on our private price list.

Porcelain bonded to metal crown

These are a hybrid between all-metal and all-ceramic dental crowns. Sometimes only the cheek side is covered by porcelain to allow the metal aspect to take the forces when eating. The clear advantage of this type of crown over an all-metal one is simply one of appearance. The disadvantage is that the porcelain covering of a bonded crown may fracture off from its underlying metal substructure.

This type of crown is available as an NHS treatment, generating a band three cost, and also as a private option.

Zirconium crowns

Zirconium is very strong and can withstand general wear and tear much more than a porcelain bonded crown. It has very good aesthetics, which is one of the main reasons that they are a good aesthetic option for back teeth.  Zirconium crowns are not available in our clinic on the NHS, as for functionality a full metal crown on the back teeth is equal to that of Zirconium, zirconium is considered to be for aesthetic purposes and is therefore only available privately.

Emax crown

An E-Max crown is a type of all-ceramic crown which is usually selected for its longer lasting, aesthetic qualities. This is a type of all-ceramic crown with an appealing translucent colour which is combined with extra strength and durability. This crown is made from a single block of lithium disilicate ceramic. This crown is considered to be the best match with your own natural teeth. The transparent colour and lifelike shape ensures that it is unlikely to be noticed amongst your own natural teeth, and in our opinion gives the best option for optimal aesthetics in front teeth. As the reason for providing an Emax crown is purely due to the aesthetic nature, they are only available privately in our practice.
